I had the opportunity to attend the six part series of Doula Tea Talks run by Death Transitions in April, 2022 and am so glad I did. I admit, prior to the start of the talks, my knowledge of end of life preparation and care was basic. I was familiar with Trusts and Wills but didn’t know what a Death Doula was and had never heard the terms ‘Legacy projects’ or ‘Death Plans.
Attending the talks really opened my eyes and made me start to think about end of life decisions. More importantly, it also started a conversation between my husband and I on what we each wanted at the end of our lives. I really looked forward to the weekly talks. The group was small and everyone on the course was friendly, warm, and I felt comfortable sharing my experiences.
It was also beneficial to hear ideas and experiences from others. Each week brought a different end of life topic to my awareness and one thing in particular that was so helpful was that Debra provided tools and resources for each topic. For example, Debra emailed me a form that helped to write an Anticipatory Care Plan that was specific to the country I live in.
In the end, I left feeling proud of myself that I was being proactive about a topic that is hard to think about let alone talk about. The end result is that I now have the start of an Advanced Directive, Will, Death Plan, and the resources to move forward with my end of life plan as a whole. In doing this, I also have peace of mind that decisions have been made and written down and these decisions will be one less thing my husband will have to worry about in what will be a difficult time for him. I highly recommend the Doula Tea Talks to anyone at any stage in their lives.
